10.4 Refraction by Spherical Lenses

Lens formula, power of a lens, and worked example for spherical lenses.

Refraction by Spherical Lenses

Lens Formula

1v1u=1f\frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u} = \frac{1}{f}

Power of a Lens

P=1f(in metres)P = \frac{1}{f \, (\text{in metres})}

The SI unit of power is the dioptre (D\text{D}).

Example

A convex lens has a focal length of 20cm20\,\text{cm}. Find its power.

f=20cm=0.20mf = 20\,\text{cm} = 0.20\,\text{m} P=10.20=+5DP = \frac{1}{0.20} = +5\,\text{D}
