12.1 Electric Current

Definition of electric current and the ampere as a unit of measurement.

Electric Current

Electric current is the rate of flow of electric charge through a conductor.

I=QtI = \frac{Q}{t}

where:

  • II = current (in amperes, A)
  • QQ = charge (in coulombs, C)
  • tt = time (in seconds, s)

One ampere is defined as the flow of 11 coulomb of charge per second.

1A=1C1s1\,\text{A} = \frac{1\,\text{C}}{1\,\text{s}}
